Bearing Modified Rating Life Lnm Calculator
Calculate modified rating life Lnm using ISO 281:2007 reliability factors and an aISO value determined for the actual bearing and operating conditions.
Results
Applicability warning: C/P is below 2. Public manufacturer guidance states that conventional rating-life theory is no longer fully valid in this range. The mathematical result is shown, but bearing-specific guidance and a more complete analysis are required.
Basic Rating Life L10
Per ISO 281, the basic rating life in millions of revolutions is:
- C — basic dynamic load rating (kN)
- P — equivalent dynamic bearing load (kN)
- p — life exponent: 3 for ball bearings, 10/3 for roller bearings
Modified Rating Life Lnm
The ISO modified rating life applies the reliability factor a1 and the condition-dependent factor aISO:
- a1 — life adjustment factor for reliability (1.00 for 90%, 0.25 for 99% in ISO 281:2007)
- aISO — life modification factor for lubrication, contamination, and fatigue load limit
Conversion to Hours
Reliability Factor a1
| Reliability (%) | a1 | Ln notation |
|---|---|---|
| 90 | 1.00 | L10m |
| 95 | 0.64 | L5m |
| 96 | 0.55 | L4m |
| 97 | 0.47 | L3m |
| 98 | 0.37 | L2m |
| 99 | 0.25 | L1m |
Practical Example
Given: C = 52.7 kN, P = 10 kN, n = 1500 RPM, a1 = 1.0, aISO = 1.0
L10 = (52.7 / 10)3 = 146.36 million rev
L10h = 146.36 × 106 / (60 × 1500) = 1,626 hours
L10m = 1.0 × 1.0 × 1,626 = 1,626 hours
⚠️ Scope: Modified rating life is a statistical fatigue rating, not guaranteed service life. ISO 281 does not cover wear, corrosion or electrical erosion. Values of aISO above 50 are not accepted here because public manufacturer guidance states that such values are not meaningful for this simplified calculation.
