Controlled maximum product envelope · controlled minimum feature envelope

Socket-Head Screw Envelope Margin Worksheet

Compare documented maximum head dimensions with documented minimum counterbore dimensions while keeping standards, tolerances, material and drawing provenance visible.

No invented ISO tableSigned dimensional marginsNo fit or strength verdict
Arithmetic only—not a fastener selection, machining tolerance or assembly acceptance tool. Enter limit dimensions from the licensed current product standard/manufacturer certificate and the controlled drawing/process capability. The worksheet does not provide ISO 4762 dimensions, choose a property class, calculate mass/torque/strength, specify a counterbore or authorize manufacture.

Controlled product and feature limits

Signed envelope margins

Diametral margin Dmin − dk,max
Nominal radial margin
Depth margin Hmin − kmax
Normalized head envelope
Normalized counterbore envelope
Input unit

Equation, units and classification

Cd = Dmin − dk,max
Cr = Cd / 2
Ch = Hmin − kmax

These are ordinary signed subtractions, not formulas specified by ISO 4762. Positive means the entered minimum feature exceeds the entered maximum rectangular/cylindrical envelope in that one dimension; zero means equality; negative means overlap in that simplified envelope. None is a fit verdict. 1 in = 25.4 mm exactly.

Model boundary and removed unsupported content

  • No unlicensed ISO dimension table. The former M3–M36 nominal values were labelled ISO 4762 without edition, tolerances, limit status or a verified table. Exact limits are now controlled inputs and remain NEEDS_LICENSED_SOURCE.
  • No false mass model. The former mass treated the head and shank as solid cylinders and ignored the socket recess, threads, chamfers, fillets, under-head geometry, thread length, tolerance, material/coating and manufacturer mass data.
  • No universal counterbore dk + 1 mm. ISO 4762 is a product standard; ISO 273 tabulates general-purpose clearance through holes, not an automatic counterbore design. Feature size is controlled by the drawing and tolerance chain.
  • No mandatory property class 12.9 claim. ISO 4762 defines product characteristics; official Bossard examples sold to ISO 4762 exist in both property classes 8.8 and 12.9. Material/class/marking must be verified for the actual item.
  • No claim that ISO 4762 and DIN 912 are identical. Bossard identifies DIN 912 as withdrawn. Interchangeability and tolerances require the exact controlled documents.
  • No strength/torque selection. ISO 898-1:2013 covers specified carbon/alloy-steel property classes within scope but explicitly does not specify corrosion, shear, torque/clamp-force performance or fatigue resistance.

Claim Clasificación Evidence
ISO 4762:2004 Edition 4 covers coarse-pitch hexagon socket head cap screws M1.6–M64, product grade A. Official ISO public status/scope ISO 4762:2004; published, confirmed 2023; French corrected version 2024-08
ISO 273:1979 covers fine/medium/coarse general-purpose clearance-hole series; special holes depend on design requirements. Official ISO public status/scope ISO 273:1979; confirmed 2024
ISO 898-1:2013 covers mechanical/physical properties of in-scope carbon/alloy-steel fasteners at 10–35 °C but not corrosion, shear, torque/clamp-force performance or fatigue. Official ISO public scope/exclusions ISO 898-1:2013 Edition 5; published, confirmed 2025, stage 90.92 to be revised
DIN 912 is withdrawn and commercial ISO 4762 products are offered in more than one property class. Official manufacturer product records Bossard BN 3, class 8.8 y BN 7, class 12.9
Cd=Dmin−dk,max; Cr=Cd/2; Ch=Hmin−kmax General arithmetic; not ISO formulas Direct dimensional-envelope subtraction shown above

Arithmetic reference example

For dk,max = 13.0 mm, kmax = 8.0 mm, Dmin = 14.0 mm and Hmin = 9.0 mm: Cd = 1.0 mm, Cr = 0.5 mm and Ch = 1.0 mm. These input values are an arithmetic benchmark only, not asserted ISO limits or a recommended counterbore.

Questions

Where is the ISO 4762 size table?

The exact table is licensed and was not independently verified from a controlled copy, so it is not reproduced or guessed.

Does a positive margin prove assembly?

No. The simplified envelope omits many geometry, tolerance, process and functional requirements listed above.

Are all ISO 4762 screws class 12.9?

No universal class is inferred here. Verify the actual material specification, property class, marking and certificate.
