ISO 4762 specifies dimensions for metric socket head cap screws (SHCS) — commonly called Allen bolts. They have a cylindrical head with a hex socket drive.
M8 SHCS: dk = 13.0 mm head diameter, k = 8.0 mm head height, 6 mm hex key.
ISO 4762 replaced DIN 912. Functionally identical for most sizes. Use ISO 4762 for new designs.
Standard SHCS per ISO 4762 are class 12.9 (Rm = 1220 MPa). Some manufacturers also offer 8.8 and 10.9.
Use SHCS when: (1) limited space/low profile needed, (2) counterbore required, (3) higher strength needed (12.9), or (4) cleaner aesthetics desired.
