Milling Net Cutting Power

Calculate metal-removal rate and theoretical net cutting power using an effective specific cutting force valid for the actual work material, chip thickness and tool geometry.

Input gate: use effective kц for the actual average/maximum chip thickness, rake/entering angle, work material and cutting condition. A kц1 value referenced to 1 mm chip thickness is not automatically the effective kц.

The factor 60·106 converts N·mm/min to kW. Equivalently, division by 60,000 gives watts. The units must be stated; writing only “/60000” beside a value labelled kW is wrong by a factor of 1000.

Sandvik Coromant metric milling formulas gives Q=apaevф/1000 in cm³/min and Pц=aeapvфкц/(60·10⁶) in kW. Sandvik’s specific-cutting-force guidance explains that kц changes with chip thickness and tool rake; material-group kц1 is a reference, not a universal effective input.

No capacity guarantee: this theoretical net-power estimate omits transient peaks, acceleration, spindle/drive limits, torque-speed envelope, auxiliary loads, tool wear, runout, interrupted-cut dynamics, stability and controller/OEM derating. Verify the selected operation with tool-maker data and the machine manufacturer.
