Sandvik metric drilling equations

Metric Drilling Parameters

Calculate kinematics, feed force, material-removal rate, net cutting power and torque from one published metric formula set. Use toolmaker/workpiece-specific inputs; outputs are planning estimates.

Metric inputsκr explicitNo generic presets

Data gate: kc varies with material group, rake geometry and actual chip thickness. Cutting speed/feed and κr must come from the actual tool/workpiece recommendation; do not use a generic material preset.

Planning result

Spindle speed n
Penetration rate vf
Feed force Ff (kb.)
Metal removal rate Q
Net cutting power Pc
Cutting torque Mc

n=1000vc/(πDc);   vf=fnn
Ff≈0.5kc(Dc/2)fnsinκr;   Q=vcDcfn/4
Pc=vcDcfnkc/(240×10³);   Mc=Pc30×10³/(πn)

A Sandvik Coromant metric drilling formula sheet defines these inputs and output units. Sandvik’s specific-cutting-force guidance explains that kc changes with material, rake and chip thickness.

Kennametal’s tool-specific drilling calculator likewise describes its outputs as theoretical planning values whose actual results vary. This page does not claim ISO compliance or machine/tool capacity approval.

Corrections to the former calculator: net power was 1000× too high because N·mm-to-N·m and W-to-kW conversions were incomplete. Feed force omitted sinκr and a factor 1/2 from Dc/2. Unsourced cutting presets, kc table and generic FAQ ranges were removed.
