T = (20 × 1500) / (4 × 5) = 30000 / 20 = 1500 N ต่อเส้น
T = 4 × 1.2 × 0.5² × 45² = 4 × 1.2 × 0.25 × 2025 = 2430 N
There are three main methods:
- Deflection method: Apply a known force perpendicular to the belt at the midpoint of the span. Measure the deflection. Use the formula T = (F × L) / (4 × d).
- Frequency method: Pluck the belt span and measure the vibration frequency with a sensor or app. Use T = 4 × m × L² × f².
- Direct measurement: Use a dedicated belt tension gauge (e.g., Gates Krikit, Optibelt TT) to read the tension directly.
The frequency method is generally more accurate and repeatable. It eliminates human error in force application and deflection measurement. It is especially preferred for timing belts where precise tension is critical.
The deflection method is simpler and requires only a ruler and a spring scale. It is adequate for V-belts and general industrial use.
Too loose: Belt slipping, squealing noise, heat generation, premature wear, reduced power transmission efficiency, and inconsistent speed.
Too tight: Excessive bearing loads, premature bearing failure, shaft deflection, belt fatigue and cracking, increased energy consumption.
Recommended schedule:
- After installation: Check after first 24–48 hours (initial stretch)
- Routine: Every 3–6 months during scheduled maintenance
- After events: After any drive modification, motor replacement, or unusual vibration/noise
Keep a log of tension readings to track belt condition over time.
Yes. New belts undergo significant initial stretch during the first hours of operation. Best practice:
- Tension new belts 20–30% above the nominal target value
- Run the drive for 24–48 hours
- Re-tension to the normal operating value
- Check again after one week of operation
Used belts that have already stabilized can be tensioned directly to the nominal value.
