MPa is N/mm², so each product is in newtons. “Ultimate product” is not a guaranteed specimen result or design resistance; the entered Rm and As must match the exact fastener and applicable source.
ISO 898-1 scope
ISO 898-1:2013, confirmed in 2025 and marked for revision, covers specified mechanical/physical properties for carbon/alloy-steel metric fasteners M1.6–M39 at 10–35 °C. It explicitly excludes requirements for shear resistance, fatigue and torque/clamp performance. The previous M3–M64 property-class lookup and “0.6 shear capacity” have therefore been removed.
Why double shear is not just a selector
Connection resistance depends on whether each plane crosses threads or shank, actual shear area, material model, bearing and tear-out of connected parts, slip, eccentricity, load sharing, combined tension/shear, fatigue and the governing code. A generic 0.6RmAs multiplied by plane count cannot establish capacity.
Inputs: obtain As, Rm and the chosen reference stress from the current licensed standard, verified manufacturer data or material certificate for the exact diameter, pitch, property class, product geometry and temperature.
