Ideal cutting-feed time · not total cycle time

Machining Cutting-Feed Time Worksheet

Divide a documented feed-path distance by a documented linear feed,or use feed per revolution multiplied by constant spindle speed for a turning traverse. The worksheet estimates time spent moving at the entered cutting feed only.

Linear feed / constant-RPM turningmm or inchNo feed recommendationsNo rapid or setup time

Document one repeated feed-motion case

Select units and model first. Changing either selector reinterprets—not converts—numbers already entered. If traverses have different lengths or feeds, calculate them separately and sum their times.

Use actual tool-centre/feed-direction path length, not merely a drawing dimension.
Enter0 if none. Include only approach/overtravel executed at the entered feed;exclude rapid positioning.
Every counted traverse must use the same total distance and feed.
Use the programmed or measured path feed applicable to this motion.
Do not use this model where CSS or another control mode changes n during the traverse.
Decision boundary: this is not total machining or cycle time. It excludes rapid moves,acceleration/deceleration,corner/feed limiting, entry ramps not included in distance, retracts, dwells, spindle acceleration, tool changes, indexing, probing, loading, unloading, inspection, feed overrides, interruptions and setup. Use CAM/controller simulation or measured cycles for production planning.

Equations and units

ModeloEquationRequired interpretation
Distance per traverseLm=L+Ladd, feedBoth distances are travelled at the same entered cutting feed. Rapid clearance is excluded.
Documented linear feedtcada=Lm/vfDistance and feed must use the same length unit;result is minutes.
Turning at constant speedvf=fnn; tcada=Lm/(fnn)fn is length/rev and n is rev/min. Constant n and a single feed direction/path are assumed.
Repeated identical traversesttotal=N tcadaN is a positive integer. For unequal segments use ttotal=ΣLi/vi.

Internal working distances use millimetres. Exact conversion:1 international inch=25.4mm. Minutes and seconds use exactly60s/min.

O que foi corrigido

The former page called the result “total machining time” while correctly admitting elsewhere that rapid positioning, tool changes and idle time were absent. The result is now consistently labelled cutting-feed time. “Approach distance” was also said to include rapid clearance, but the code added all of it at the cutting feed. The replacement input accepts only additional distance actually traversed at that same feed.

Negative additional distance, negative or fractional passes, numeric prefixes such as 200mm and silent fallback to one pass were formerly accepted. Strict whole-value validation now rejects them. Fixed 2–5mm guidance,pre-filled examples, quick presets and generic advice to increase speed/feed were removed because safe cutting data depend on the workpiece, tool, engagement, holder, fixture, machine, coolant and production objective.

Source and applicability boundary

Sandvik Coromant,Formulas and definitions for turning—metric publishes Tc=lm/(fnn) with lm in mm,fn in mm/rev,n in r/min and Tc in minutes. Its milling metric sheet defines table feed vf=fznzc;the inch sheet uses the equivalent inch/min convention.

Kennametal’s official speed/feed calculator states that theoretical calculations are for planning and actual results vary;its guidance also ties suitable data to the material, tool, machine and workholding. This worksheet therefore does not recommend a feed or cutting speed.

O Manufacturing Processes-I Virtual Lab published example uses a150mm turning length,0.4mm/rev and500r/min,obtaining t=150/(0.4×500)=0.75min. That example is included in the independent test set. The arithmetic is general engineering kinematics, not a formula attributed to ISO.

Use a different model when

  • Turning uses constant surface speed or RPM changes materially during facing, contouring or diameter change.
  • Toolpath segments have different feeds,feed limits,arc corrections,ramps or controller look-ahead effects.
  • Multiple passes have different distances, feeds or entry/exit motions.
  • The desired result is quote/cycle time rather than ideal motion time at cutting feed.
