Kinematic milling relation

Milling Table Feed Calculator

Calculate programmed table feed and feed per spindle revolution from a documented feed per effective tooth, the effective cutting-edge count and spindle speed. This tool does not select a safe cutting condition.

vf = fz × zc × nMetric and inchNo cutting-data presets

Input boundary: fz and n must come from data applicable to the exact tool, insert/grade, work material and hardness, diameter, radial/axial engagement, coolant and operation. Enter zc, the effective cutting edges used by that data—not automatically every pocket, flute or installed insert.

General engineering formula—not an ISO formula

vf = fz zc na fn = vf/n = fz zc. Here vf is table/feed speed, fz is feed per effective tooth, zc is the positive integer number of effective cutting edges, n is spindle revolutions per minute, and fn is feed per spindle revolution.

Dimensional check: (length/tooth) × (effective teeth/revolution) × (revolutions/minute) = length/minute. The “tooth” and “revolution” counts cancel. With all length inputs in millimetres, output is mm/min; with inches, output is in/min. The conversion uses the exact NIST definition 1 in = 25.4 mm.

Sandvik Coromant’s official metric and inch milling formula sheets give vf=fz×n×zc and define zc as the number of effective teeth. Kennametal independently gives feed rate = RPM × chip load × number of teeth. The ISCAR 2023 cutting-tools guide gives the same milling relation and a published example: fz=0.25 mm/tooth, z=10 and n=153 rev/min produce vf=382.5 mm/min.

ISO context

ISO 229:1973, edition 1 remains Published and was confirmed in 2023. Its catalogue scope concerns standardized machine-tool speeds and feeds expressed in millimetres or inches per minute, revolution or stroke for a limited class of machines, and excludes continuously variable speeds/feeds. It is cited only for terminology/unit context: this page does not reproduce its schedules, does not claim that the multiplication formula is an ISO formula and does not perform an ISO conformity check.

Not calculated or approved: radial chip thinning, entering-angle/chip-thickness correction, circular/interpolated tool-path feed correction, runout and unequal tooth loading, ramping/plunging, machine feed/acceleration limits, spindle power/torque, chatter/rigidity, chip evacuation, coolant, tool wear, workholding or safety. Confirm the result against the tool maker, machine limits, CNC programming convention and a controlled trial before machining.
