Condition Monitoring Method Planning Worksheet

Record the information needed to select and validate a monitoring method. This page does not infer a technique from a generic machine/fault pair.

ISO 17359 contextNo recommendation engineEvidence required

Meaning of completion: all planning fields contain text. It does not mean the method is technically adequate, safe, cost-effective or compliant; a competent reviewer must verify the evidence and applicable standards.

ISO 17359:2018, edition 3 and confirmed in 2023, gives general procedures for setting up a condition-monitoring programme and references associated standards. Its official scope does not support a universal lookup that declares one method “primary” from only a machine label and suspected fault.

Method selection needs the asset function, failure mechanism and consequences; operating conditions; measurable symptom and detection lead time; sensor/sample and acquisition chain; baseline/criteria; validation; competence and review. Technique-specific standards must then be checked. For vibration, ISO 13373-1:2002 covers measurement parameters, transducers, locations, attachment, collection and operating conditions.

No diagnosis: common signatures are not unique fault proofs. A spectrum component, temperature anomaly, particle count or current sideband can have multiple causes and requires validated context and corroboration.
