Scoped mechanical arithmetic
Brake Torque Arithmetic Calculator
Evaluate an inertia-only constant-deceleration component or a disc-friction torque with an explicitly defined force. This page does not select or rate a brake.

Inertia-only constant deceleration
J must be the total equivalent inertia referred to the brake shaft. Tᵢ excludes external/load torque and assumes the requested speed change is linear over the entered interval. ΔE is the decrease in rotational kinetic energy represented by J, not automatically the heat absorbed by one brake.
Disc-friction force definitions
Сайтът Twiflex industrial disc-brake catalogue defines clamping force Fn as force on each pad, gives Fb = 2μFn for two equal pads and then torque as Fb·rₑ. Here ΣNᵢ already means the sum across active interfaces, so no extra surface multiplier is applied. If the source already gives tangential braking force, choose that basis and do not multiply by μ again.
Why this is not brake selection
Сайтът Stromag NFF catalogue requires all inertias and torques to be referred to the brake shaft, includes load-torque direction, and distinguishes switching delay, torque build-up and dynamic torque. It also says torque-only selection is insufficient and heat capacity must be checked.
Not modelled: load/holding torque, gravity direction, gearing losses, motor regenerative torque, switching and build-up time, dynamic friction change, peak/shock loads, multiple brakes, duty cycle, energy per stop, heat rejection, wear, statutory requirements or functional safety. Establish margins from the complete application and governing requirements; this calculator supplies none.
